Think you might be autistic?
Not ready for an assessment but want to chat with an assessor?
Understanding yourself as potentially autistic doesn’t always have to start with an assessment. Traditional processes may feel overwhelming or inaccessible, and that’s okay. Self-discovery is a journey that can begin in many ways - one that’s valid whether or not it leads to a formal diagnosis.
For those navigating high-masking, internalised, or less stereotypical autistic qualities, it’s common to feel unsure about how or where to start. Explore Sessions offer a supportive, judgment-free space to ask questions, reflect, and better understand your experiences.
NeuroDiscovery is an autistic owned and led neurodiversity affirming service. We’re here to help you understand yourself, celebrate who you are, while being real about the challenges of being autistic in a world that isn’t designed for us - yet.
Autism assessments aren’t the only way to explore your potential autistic identity.
A different option to explore your identity.
What is it?
An explore sessions is a one-hour appointment with an autism assessor designed for those curious about whether their qualities and experiences align with the autistic neurotype. This informal consultation provides a safe space to ask questions, receive real-time feedback, and gain guidance on your journey of self-discovery, helping you explore your identity with confidence. The package includes the Autistic Identity Insights Guidebook to support your ongoing discovery.
Who is it for?
This package is for those exploring the possibility of being autistic or seeking validation of their self-identification. It can also help prepare you for formal assessment if desired. Once off, or multiple if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who will the session be with?
The session is held with Dasha Kolesik, an autistic Speech Pathologist and autism assessor (also known as a ‘diagnostician’). She is renowned for her neurodiversity-affirming approach, deep understanding of the autistic neurotype, and pioneering work in developing a new understanding of autistic communication and connection.
As an autistic woman herself, Dasha brings not only professional expertise but also lived experience. As an inaugural member of the South Australian Government’s Autism Strategy Advisory Committee, she draws on diverse autistic experiences to provide insights in both advocacy and assessment work.
Passionate about recognising the experiences of those who are high-masking or have less stereotypical presentations, she is highly sought-after for her knowledge in this area and regularly presents on these topics across the country.
Dasha also runs While You Wonder - a space for supporting self-discovery and self-identification of the autistic neurotype. Visit the WYW website here and check out the instagram account here.
Where is the Explore session held?
Wherever you like! Explore sessions are held online via telehealth, so there’s no need to leave the house to gain insights into your neurotype.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?
No, you don’t. However, you may choose to write down some questions or things you’d like to share about your experience to explore together.
I can’t figure out if I should have an assessment. Would an Explore session help?
Often, the initial stage of questioning can be a confusing time, and you may find yourself thinking, “My ___ and ___ qualities fit in with the autistic neurotype, but I don’t ___, so maybe I’m not autistic.” This can sometimes lead to decision paralysis when it comes to assessment. An Explore session may help overcome this by exploring specific areas that you aren’t sure fit with an autistic identification.
Will I get a diagnosis from this session?
No. This is not a formal assessment, and you will not receive a formal diagnosis at this session. You may be guided in your self-identification or helped to decide whether to get an assessment, but if you’re looking for formal identification, have a look at the Confirm and Confirm Extra packages instead.
Can I have multiple Explore sessions?
Absolutely! While some people opt to save up for an assessment, others prefer the laid-back style of Explore and aren’t looking for a formal diagnosis, but a sounding board in the form of someone who has intimate knowledge of the autistic neurotype.
What happens after an Explore session?
After the session, you'll have a better understanding of your neurotype and the next steps you might want to take. Whether that's pursuing a formal assessment, seeking out more resources, or simply reflecting on the insights gained - it's entirely up to you.
